About dervisch

With regard to dervisch, what is it with this fellow then? Good question and the very point that this page seeks to answer. Does it? Not comprehensivly, but it will give a fairly accurate description of one particular facet of the music-making chap's character, that is the music-making part.

Dervisch is the artist name of Andrew Scott, a 'bedroom' producer located in the south of the UK, around 35miles from London in the lush, leafy commuter belt of the home counties, specifically south-west of the city, about half way between central London and the south coast. Not one of the gentry, not landed and not expecting to inherit a tasty estate at any point.

Though it is true that this area has more than its fair share of tasty estates. There's one in particular which, whenever I see it, usually by way of their enormous electric gate-entry system with often an annoyed delivery driver trying to get someone's attention to come and sign for this delivery, while unseen people speak to them on the intercom, until at last they relent and open the gate. Each time I pass it, it sparks the same thought in my mind: one day (reassuring myself)... One day I might be lucky enough to find myself mowing those lawns.

Because that's what I do. When I'm not pouring my heart and soul into my latest musical creation, for the part where I must scratch a living, I am a gardener at those times.

Music has been especially interesting to me since my earliest thoughts. I can't remember any period before or during this time when I haven't been wholeheartedly consumed by either the idea of making music, or the joy of actually making music. In whatever ways were open at the time. In the early years this meant being in a band, recording to 4track tape machine.

I was, in many, but all of which were unknown to nearly everyone. Stepping stones that eventually lead to the present. During the same period I also developed other interests, in computing and smoking and I don't regret either.

And now computers are ubiquitous, and although smoking has declined it is, thankfully, still available to enjoy, now at outrageous prices of course, and with far less tolerance of others' habits in the modern world, meaning that there are not many places left in which to partake, should you wish to. Maybe easier to vape.

So there it is: my motivations condensed, my trifecta. The fact that now, in order to make the music, you must also be effective with computers to give the best chance of capturing and faithfully reproducing the magic ✨ much of which is accidental. The fact that there is now, many years later, still a way to combine each of these elements at the same time multiplies my enjoyment and makes me happy and content. dervisch.
